Split Times Posted

Swim Time: 8:59 Novice rank #2, overall women's rank #50
The swim time surprised me a bit, I thought it would be much slower because I freaked out so bad.

T1-1:44 I thought I would hate feeling wet while riding my bike but I didn't even notice. Funny what happens when you are all psyched up, you just don't give a damn about comfort.

Bike Time:39:16 Novice rank #2, overall women's rank #45
I thought I was faster than that on the bike. Maybe because I enjoyed riding the most so it went by fast.

T2: 1:40 I don't know why my T2 was so long. I do remember fumbling around tying my shoes. I remember my husband was taking pictures and I was yelling "I can't tie my freaking shoes! Help me!"

Sucky Run Time: 26:56 Novice rank #2, overall women's rank #50
OUCH! This was painful to look at, I was running about 9 min. miles. Very sad..

I am consistent I came in #2 Novice and I was 2-2-2 for each leg
Came in #46 Overall women and again pretty consistent 50-45-50

Things I learned: I should have practiced running after riding my bike. I really wasn't prepared for my legs to feel like tree trunks. I felt like I was running in slo-mo.

I should have practiced running on different types of terrain, grass and gravel.

I should have practiced drinking fluids on my bike. I think I bonked on the run because I didn't drink anything during the race.

Things I question: Do you consume fluids during a sprint? Do you eat a gel?

I drank about 48oz of coffee before the race. My friend said this was a bad idea because coffee dehydrates you. Do you try to limit coffee intake pre-race? (It's wasn't my fault! Starbucks was giving out free coffee at the race! Maybe this is why it felt like my heart was racing.)

Don't know if I ate enough pre-race. One banana and three bites of a muffin. Do you try to eat some protein pre-race?

Next race is in Cheraw, SC- 4/29. I am going to learn from the mistakes I made this first race. It will be my first open water swim at Cheraw, I'm excited. It's only one week before White Lake Half. I won't go balls to the walls but I really wanted to get a open water race in before the Half.

Free coffee at the race? Now you tell me! Still great times! Lace locks are good for transitions during sprints. Several different brands, I just use the cheapies from the counter at Inside Out Sports. I usually run without socks in a sprint. During Oly's, I set up my transition by putting my socks on and then rolling them off into little donuts, then placing in my shoes. When I come off the bike (I don't wear socks during the bike, ever) I just roll the socks back onto my feet. Works pretty well. As for your legs feeling bad after the bike, try lowering your seat just a tiny bit. It moves more of the work to your quads and saves your hamstrings for the run. I ride a road bike and swear by this! I don't have any problems running off the bike. SOrry I didn't give this advice pre-race... it all came back to me after reading your report!

Lots to comment on here- let me start with this. You had an AWESOME race. Your first tri is never easy.

I agree with Tridaddy about the speed laces. You can get them at any running store for a few bucks and they are great!

I run after nearly all my bike rides during the season to get used to the heavy legs feeling. Sometimes I only run 10 minutes, but the first ten are when your legs feel the heaviest.

Nutrition- I do my pre race nutrition on the night before the race. I go to bed well fed and I usually eat only something small in the morning to settle my stomach. I eat a gel 15 minutes before my swim starts, and usually drink one bottle of fluid on the bike (for sprints). The bottom line is this- experiment, find out what works for you during training, and stick with it. The cardinal rule of triathlons is Nothing New on Race Day! Period! That means food, clothing, whatever.

You won't be happy with this next comment. Sorry. I did the Cheraw triathlon in 2004. The run wasn't as hilly as what you did Saturday, but the footing was much worse. From what I remember, 75% of the run was on loose sand. Like, top of the beach loose sand. Everybody's run splits were really slow due to this. Maybe they still have the same course, maybe they have cleaned it up some. I am sure you will let us know.

Girl! I am proud of you! I am glad that we could do it together. And about the coffee comment? COFFEE is a must for coffee drinkers like you and me and that is NOT bad. But just like alcohol, we need to know when to stop! I know my body well enough that as long as I start early in the morning and I go to the bathroom at LEAST 2-3 times before race time rolls around, then I am GOOD TO GO! Then I start to replenish with water or gatorade. A pre-night and race day regimen is a must for me and I stick to it b/c I know what works for me. It could be different for you. Like Jamie said, test things out. You'll find what works for you to make your body run the best way it can!

I will bring you an extra pair of "Yankez" tomorrow for you to try on your running shoes this week. They will help a lot!
