Memory Game

I just finished morning training at the other waitressing job. I have to memorize the entire breakfast and lunch menu. I have to use codes, like 2 om-sm saus-hb-tst. That's one over medium egg, smoked sausage, hashbrowns and toast. I have to memorize all the prices too. Remember the game Memory when you were a kid? I used to be good at that game. I hope my childhood skills will help.

So, I'm trying to think of the best way to memorize all the prices and codes. Any ideas? I was thinking about flash cards. Maybe write the code on the front of the card and price on back? Any better suggestions? Anyone want to play order up? :)

i have ALWAYS wished i had a job in a restaurant.

closest i came was delivering pizza... which was the best job ever... too bad i was too young to understand the 'tips' that were being offered... back when i was 17, tanned, and had great hair.

i think i'd be lousy now though... if someone ordered: 2 om-sm saus-hb-tst ... i'd be not able to control myself, and would blurt out 'Are you sure you should be having that?'

maybe, you should just tell everyone they are getting 'Oatmeal, juice, and a cup of Coffee'... tell them, I don't make the rules, Bold does...

i think bold's onto something. nothing says "autonomy" like exerting your will over others. (for their own good, of course.)

the greatest thing about working in food service? -the constant stream of people you'll see & meet.

I'll have 3 scrambled eggs with cheese, some biscuits with sausage gravy and a glass of chocolate milk....mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I would like an egg white vegetarian omelet, easy on the cheese, a medium grapefruit juice, dry wheat toast, and fresh tomato instead of hashbrowns.

Thank you!!

I guess you aren't getting much help from the guys!

Doonsbury has been doing a skit about Zonker working at a restaurant where they server supersized food and he tries to talk the patrons out of it - very funny.

Anyhow, I think the abbreviations tend to make some sense so you shouldn't have too much trouble with those. Just write the words long hand on the left side of the page and write the shorthand next to it and voila! As for the prices, that just takes time. I say make a cheat sheet until you have taken so many orders for 2 scrambled egges with hash browns and whole wheat toast, no butter 9 mmmmmmmmmm.....) that you will just know.

21st knows what she is talking about, as usual. Good luck with the memorization. You're going to hate all of the special orders!

I'm sorry...Bold's comments are making me cry with laughter...I can just see it happening!

Sorry Mojo, no tips (get it??!) on memorizing. I think you'll probably have it down in like 24 hours though. I have this feeling you're a little overachiever. I mean that in a good way :-)

I'll take a tossed salad, hold the oninons and mushrooms, add extra tomatos with ranch dressing. Oh ya, and I would like my wife back.

Wow, that brings back memories. You'll get the hang of it real soon, don't worry. By the end of the month, you'll be a pro. Glad you landed on your feet.

You'll have the abbreviations down in no time. Then you can tell people you are bilingual.

Bush and the Republicans were not protecting us on 9-11, and we aren't a lot safer now. We may be more afraid due to george bush, but are we safer? Being fearful does not necessarily make one safer. Fear can cause people to hide and cower. What do you think? Why has bush turned our country from a country of hope and prosperity to a country of belligerence and fear.
What happened to us, people? When did we become such lemmings?
We have lost friends and influenced no one. No wonder most of the world thinks we suck. Thanks to what george bush has done to our country during the past three years, we do!

I haven't been to your blog in a long time, so I'm still trying to catch up, but it sounds like you're diving into things and enjoying it for the most part. Way to go!
